  The Outokumpu Deep Drilling Project
  General

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has started a deep drilling project in eastern Finland, in the area of Outokumpu (Fig. 1). In the next 12-14 months we are drilling a 2,5 km deep research borehole in the Precambrian crust of the Fennoscandian Shield. Our plans are to open the project for national and international scientific co-operation. The basic operations of the project include drilling the hole to 2.5 km depth with continuous coring, geophysical loggings using 20 different methods, as well as hydrogeological sampling and hydraulic permeability measurements.

The Geological Survey of Finland has a special arrangement for the drilling operations. Finland and Russia have signed an inter-governmental agreement which makes it possible to convert old debts of the former USSR into deliveries of scientific instruments and services to Finland. The Russian drilling company NEDRA , famous for deep and super-deep drilling in Russia, such as the Kola Super-deep Hole, is working as our contractor together with another governmentally owned Russian company Machinoexport. NEDRA is responsible of the drilling operations, basic borehole geophysics and hydrogeological sampling and experiments under the supervision of GTK.

Interested in participating?

If you take an interest in deep drilling research and would like to contribute in the Outokumpu Deep Drilling Project, we would be glad to provide more information. We look forward to receiving your expression of interest, addressed to Dr. I.T. Kukkonen at GTK (preferably by e-mail, contact information at the end of this text):

An international workshop was organized in October 2004 in Espoo, Finland, for introducing the project in more detail, developing new research ideas and co-ordinating the work between different participating teams. For more details, see the workshop programme and abstracts (International Workshop, Espoo, Finland, October 25-26, 2004).

There is a open call for research proposals in the framework of the Outokumpu Deep Drilling Project (Call for proposals) with a deadline of February 15, 2005.
